While searching for information on projection methods, I came upon the topic of this post. Someone has been working out a way to project 3d rendered images onto actual 3d objects. Listed at the bottom of the site as a possible application of this idea is the recoloration of ancient sculptures. This struck me, as this is exactly what we’re covering in my art history class. When we think of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures, we usually think of bare white marble. It is quite lovely in its way, but it must be remembered that most of these sculptures were originally painted. Recoloration through light projection is an interesting idea in that it would not effect the original piece in any way–which, of course, is an absolute must with priceless antiquities. It would be quite a sight to see the Parthenon in full color.
