This is somewhat disturbing. This artist decided to grow an actual ear, 1/4 of his actual ear size, from living tissue. The ear is actually somewhat a living organism itself. He will then attach the ear to his arm (I think??). This confronts societies’ cultural perceptions of life and questions the wholeness of the body…
Man, I’m just not so sure about this. I know that, as artists, we have come to the point where, as post-modernism describes, everything has “already been done.” But have we done soo much that we have hit a creative wall? A wall that leads us only to manipulate the human body?? It is true that science does what they want to whomever or whatever they want, in the name of science. But are we really ready to start using the human body as a canvas? Some things are still very sacred, whether or not science has desecrated them already. And this ability to manipulate and change the human body may (and almost always does) fall into the wrong hands, or have some extremely negative consequences.
On the other hand, if we have the capabilities to change the body “safely” in this era of modern technology and science, why not?? Why not thrust ourselves further into the future of creating and re-creating, so that we are able to fulfill our sci-fi dreams??
Because it’s goddamn scary, that’s why! I’m one of the many (or few??) that just isn’t ready for this type of “artistry,”..ARE YOU??
