de la cruz- Casey Reas: Chance Operations

on

            Though
his work Casey Rea’s has explored the idea of letting go of order and structure
with the use of “organic algorithms” and pushes the effect of randomness.  He touches on the fact that the early artist
society and they’re work came from a time where art was strict and
purposeful.  He’s goes on saying that
they’re mission was to maintain order in the “chaos” of life creations and
destructions. Rea’s work was propelled from a study of artificial life where he
had zero control over the images that were being produced and printed. He then
begins to develop work that plays on the artificial vs. organic where he uses
algorithms to create images that mimic life forms through seemingly natural
flows.  My most favorite work that Rea
presented was the “Tissue” project where he programs software to simulate the
nervous systems in biology.  In his
simulation he sets up vehicles with different codes to act and react to each
other. He then records the paths the vehicles take over time and prints the
recording. The idea of setting up a program and at some point will begin to act
on its own. Leaving art to “chance” and breaking from the rationality of making
conscious marks to me is the most interesting idea he shares. I believe he was successful
in bringing art to life and giving art a behavior.
