Art Against Information

Art Against Information
In the art against information article we read the author
talks about how artists are using various information found on the web and
using it as a muse to create various forms of work. One uses breakup blogs as a
source, another uses the term “I feel” and others use spam. The Internet
personally has never inspire me, however it is the equivalent to becoming
inspired by something happening in the news and strikes strong personal
feelings. For example, when the teacher strike was going on, it inspired me to
go out and photograph this. This inspired me because just a year and a half ago
I was teaching. Like the teacher strike inspired me, spam inspired Alex
Dragulescu. As almost everyone who has ever had email knows that spam is a very
annoying email, that can pretty much get through any type of filter provided
(at least in my experience). Alex Dragulescu created two pieces of work that
displayed this. One is entitled Spam Architecture
and the other is Spam Plants. These
works of art are quite beautiful. As I have mentioned in a past blog, there are
a good number of contemporary artists that can give you that “raised eyebrow.”
However Alex’s work on spam is not one of them. They way he displays spam in Spam Architecture, how it seems to get
through everything and just annoy the receiver is displayed accurately. He uses
a cardboard like display, with sharp edged and cluttered sides. In his other
work Spam Plants, he displays spam
with just a multitude of yellow flowers. Just like spam is all the same the yellow
flowers are all the same. Alex and the many others who are using information as
a source of inspiration to create new media art is not unlike me using
information as a muse to paint a magnificent picture; These artists are simply
using another kind of media.
