Slow Design Principles in Designed Products

Immediately after reading “Priniciple 1: Reveal”in Carolyn F. Strauss’s and Alastair Fuad-Luke’s “The Slow Design Principles,” the new iPhone came to mind. It was when I read the part about materials and methods being overlooked that made me think of the iPhone 5 and eventually just Apple in general. On Apple’s website there is a video…

Slow Design Principles

The first design project that really intrigued me was Tyranny of the Plug by Dick Van Hoff. These are various kitchen machines that perform actions of chopping, blending, or churning with the use of electricity. In this particular design project, it uses no electricity, and instead, it uses human energy. This fits into the slow…

Applications of Slow Design Principles

While researching different works that use Slow Design Principles, I found a project titled     Amazingness by Anna Hillman. Amazingness, a collection of photographs taken throughout London, was Hillman’s way of presenting the sublimity and “amazingness” of nature in urban life. Through this project, Hillman captures several Slow Design Principles, particularly revealing experiences in…

Philip Beesley Architect, Stage designer, Graphic Designer, Artist Mr. Beesley has definitely showed his range in artistic endeavors, although I don’t like all of his work he does show a strong and powerful range in skills. I think his strongest ability his to take an idea and expand on it and add his own flair…

Philip Beesley A artist that specialized in organic forms that were centralized architectural pieces made for interior spaces. These forms are not only strange in appearance but also active in awareness, he would say that they are alive. One of the works that I looked at named Implant Matrix created a canopy of organic structures that appeared much like spider webs or jellyfish reacted to human interaction. Some of the motions that it gives off is some thing close to breathing, ingesting or convulsing. The Idea itself is wonderfully inspiring, having a kinetic interior space or even exterior space is thought provoking and engaging, it would be something to consider for some of the newer architects designing. That being said some of the styling is very repulsive, very alien in the literal and metaphorical sense. I think that the way that it looks will scare some viewers critically analyzed. Another one of his sculptures named Endothelium, which contained a number of these pods that are setup in this array somewhat like a forest. These pods are filled with copper, vinegar and aluminum that give this very yellow glow. The legs are affixed to some kind of vibrating device that made them shake as if they were alive. What Beesley was trying emulate was the separation of organs such as the organs on an ameba. Idea and elements of its design are pretty awesome and imposing structure however the superstructure in which the sacks are suspended in look a bit to mechanical while contrasting the sacks is a great dialogue I believe it hurts the overall message.

The Hylozoic Ground is an installation piece that depicts a forest, made of acrylic fronds, that appear to breathe when they move. It is covered in sensors that responds to the environment, using filtered moisture and particles, allowing it to do such a movement. The idea behind this piece was to show how, in a futuristic…
