Slow Design
By: Dziedzom A. Bansah
The Slow Design movement has become popular. According to Fuad-Lake, Slow Design is “a new evaluative tool to encourage design practices to orientate towards social, cultural and environmental sustainability.” There are six principles that classify slow design projects.
The first principle of slow deign that I chose was reflect. According to Fuad-Lake, it represents, “Slow Design artifacts/environments/experiences induce contemplation and what slowLab has coined ‘reflective consumption.’” The project that I feel depicts reflect is the Paris Pont de Artes love lock. Many couples go to the de Arts bridge and place a lock on there in hopes that their relationship last forever.
The second principle of slow deign that I chose was evolve. According to Fuad-Lake, it represents, “Slow Design recognizes that richer experiences can emerge from the dynamic maturation of artifacts, environments and systems over time. Looking beyond the needs and circumstances of the present day, slow designs are (behavioural) change agents.” The project that I feel depicts evolve is cell phones. Cell phones first started as a huge block with keypads, but overtime, they evolved to become touch screen, fingerprint censored and camera incorporated phones. Also, many phone companies started than before. I remember my mom having a huge keypad panasonic phone in the past, yet she currently holds and iPhone. There was also the time when flip phones were popular. Cell phone will never disappear, they will only continue to evolve over the years.
Possible Ideas:
A two color light shower head for the bathroom. Currently, there is a light shower head but it only runs on one color. My shower head creation will be red and blue, in which red indicates hot and blue indicates cold. When the water is warm, the lights will be a mix of blue and red. In addition, I would make it censored, so that it only turns on and stays on while someone is under the shower.
I would create a website where I list all the artists of Slow Design. While I was trying to find a slow design or some artists that represent it, so I get a sense of what it is, I found it difficult to find any. I kept running into walls and coming up empty so I took a look at some of the past blogs on this topic, which helped me understand each principle better.
