Artwork | “Untitled” (Portrait of Ross in L.A.) |
Description of Work | A pile of candy (ideally weighing the same as an adult male). Visitors take candy from the work. |

How does the project fit the principles | Principle 3: Reflect is shown because this work is an allegory to the life of the Artist’s partner Ross Laycock who died of an AIDS related illness. The taking of the candy if weight loss and suffering to his death. The candy is replenished in the installation like it is giving life again.
Principle 5 fits into this installation because it encourages the user to actively participate. |
What Impresses you? | Something I admire in art is how a piece makes the audience feel. And when it encourages the participation between the work and the audience I feel like the audience has a deeper understanding of the piece and it is more memorable. |

I’m not sure if this is considered artwork, but I think it fits the principles. |
Description of Work | The work is basically that the site will self-destruct if a message is not sent to it in 24 hours. |

How does the project fit the principles | I admire Principle 5 and how it is some sort of call to action when it engages the audience. It sort of has the audience to be accountable because if they hear about it and they do not participate then the website will be gone. It is sort of like that theory where someone falls and there is a lot of people around, people are less likely to help the individual because they think someone else will help, So in this case the website will disappear if no one remembers.
I feel like principle 4: engage will also fit in this situation because you need to share the website as well in order for the website to continue standing, it ‘s not like one person alone can keep it running because it can be forgotten. So sharing it would cause it to be kept. |
What Impresses you? | What causes people to care about this website? It isn’t living. If it self- destructs it self-destructs. And yet people send messages to it. |
Fantasy Project | “Take a Smile” |
2 of the Slow Design Principles | I feel like this project uses Principle 1: Reveal because the materials used are ordinary. Just a note pad and recycled cardboard. The notes are small and somewhat irrelevant, It may be mundane.
I wanted to include principle 5 because I admire art that encourages audiences to participate in the work. |
Describe the Project | I created this project back in middle school. A couple of my friends and I ran the art show and my teacher allowed us to present a booth.
Something I value is being able to help others, I love cheering my friends up. I remember passing notes in class and someone thought it was funny so it just kept passing around and the conversation didn’t end between just two people. Basically I had a sticky note pad and each post-it note had a unique smiley face. The note pad was attached onto this stand where it encouraged another person to take it. I was hoping it would cheer the audience up, and if they wanted they would pass the note along, so the moment did not end with them. |
